How It Works

IceCap External Algae Scrubbers are designed to be placed outside and above the sump, allowing water to flow back directly into the sump. The included IceCap EVO water pump feeds water into the scrubber, trickling it down onto a screen illuminated by powerful LED lights. As algae grow on the screen, they effectively scrub the aquarium water of excess nutrients, reducing algae growth inside the display tank. Once covered, the screen can be harvested easily, removing contaminants from the system.

How to Harvest Algae

To harvest, simply remove the top and loosen the quick-release union on the side. Lift the pipe and algae screen out and rinse them underwater. Use a scraper to gently remove the buildup, being careful to leave some algae behind to seed the next batch for faster regrowth. Expect to harvest algae every 1-3 weeks under normal conditions.

When to Run Your Scrubber

Many hobbyists prefer to run their algae scrubbers on a reverse daylight schedule, helping to stabilize pH levels in the aquarium. This can be easily achieved by using a timer or aquarium controller to program a 12-hour photoperiod that runs opposite to the display tank's lighting.
